What are anionic surfactants?

Strong detergent substances

In detergents and cleaning agents, surfactants serve as so-called "detergent substances". Surfactants with a negatively charged functional group are called anionic surfactants. Like all surfactants, anionic surfactants consist of a hydrophilic ("water-loving") and a hydrophobic ("water-repellent") part.

Typical anionic surfactants are alkyl carboxylates (= soap), alkylbenzenesulfonates (ABS), fatty alcohol sulfates (FAS) or alkyl ether sulfates (SLES).

Where are anionic surfactants used?

Detergents, shampoos and more

Anionic surfactants are characterized by a particularly high washing power. They are therefore primarily used in detergents and shampoos. The sulphonates ABS and SAS are known for their good wetting properties. Since they can also be used in hard water, they are often used in powdered detergents.
